The Lemosho Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most picturesque and rewarding trails, offering a gentle acclimatization profile and stunning wilderness scenery from start to finish. Beginning on the quiet western side of the mountain, the route winds through untouched rainforest, crosses the expansive Shira Plateau, and merges with the famed Machame Route for the dramatic Barranco Wall ascent and summit attempt. Travel Itinerary
Day 0: Arrival in Tanzania
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Rest and attend your pre-trek briefing and equipment check with your mountain guide.
Accommodation: Available on request.
Day 1: Lemosho Gate → Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m)
After breakfast, drive to Lemosho Gate (2,100m) for registration, then begin trekking through quiet, lush rainforest. Keep an eye out for colobus monkeys and colorful bird species as you ascend to Mti Mkubwa Camp.
Distance: 6 km | Time: 3–4 hrs | Habitat: Rainforest
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa → Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)
Climb gradually out of the forest and into moorland, enjoying sweeping views of Kilimanjaro’s western slopes. Continue toward the Shira Plateau and settle in at Shira 1 Camp.
Distance: 8 km | Time: 5–6 hrs | Habitat: Moorland
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Day 3: Shira 1 → Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)
A gentle walk across the broad Shira Plateau. This is one of the most scenic parts of the route. Optional acclimatization hikes are available in the afternoon.
Distance: 7 km | Time: 3–4 hrs | Habitat: Moorland
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
Day 4: Shira 2 → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Ascend steadily toward Lava Tower for altitude adaptation, then descend through dramatic valleys to Barranco Camp, surrounded by towering cliffs and hanging glaciers.
Distance: 10 km | Time: 6–8 hrs | Habitat: Alpine Desert → Moorland
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Day 5: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Tackle the famous Barranco Wall—a memorable but non-technical climb—then traverse a series of ridges to reach Karanga Camp. This day is crucial for acclimatization.
Distance: 5 km | Time: 4–5 hrs | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Karanga Camp
Day 6: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Continue ascending to Barafu Camp, your final base before the summit. Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and mentally preparing for your midnight summit push.
Distance: 4 km | Time: 3–5 hrs | Habitat: High Alpine Desert
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Day 7: Barafu → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)
After breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Your first view of the crater reveals a breathtaking, hidden ecosystem. Descend 600m into this natural wildlife haven, home to dense populations of lions, buffalo, zebras, hippos, and the rare black rhino. After your crater tour, continue to Kilimanjaro Airport for your departure flight.
