6. How serious is altitude sickness on Kilimanjaro?

Altitude sickness is common due to the rapid ascent. Slow trekking, hydration, and proper acclimatization (7–8 day routes) greatly reduce the risk.

Routes that allow more acclimatization (Lemosho, Machame) have success rates of 85–95%. Shorter routes have lower rates.

Trekking crews prepare nutritious meals including soups, vegetables, rice, pasta, fruits, and snacks to ensure energy throughout the climb.
